North Island Straits Coastal Plan

Resources

The North Island Straits (NIS) coastal plan area is situated on Canada's Pacific coast between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia.. The NIS plan area includes the foreshore and nearshore areas of Vancouver Island, the mainland coast and the associated islands and islets from Port Neville in Johnstone Strait to Cape Caution in the Queen Charlotte Strait. It extends approximately 138 km from east to west, encompassing some 560,000 ha of marine waters. Click here to view a map of the study area.

The primary purpose of the NIS Coastal Plan is to address conflicting and competing resource interests through the management of foreshore and near-shore land; it does not include privately owned lands or matters related to aboriginal rights and title.

The Plan is a result of an efficient, consultative process that included all levels of government, community leaders, key stakeholders, ENGOs, industry and First Nations. Official comments are available for review here.
