Resources
Kyuquot Sound on northwest Vancouver Island is characterised by diverse competing interests and uses for coastal nearshore and foreshore land. These interests include tourism activities and public recreation, aquaculture, and First Nation interests in traditional practices and protection of cultural values. The First Nation and residents of Kyuquot Sound have experienced serious economic declines resulting primarily from the restructuring of the commercial fishery. Local communities are now seeking additional economic opportunities in the area and recognise the advantages of integrated resource planning to identify appropriate uses of Crown foreshore and nearshore.
The Kyuquot Sound Coastal Plan (KSCP) will enhance sustainable economic development and uphold environmental values through a government-led process that will involve targeted and efficient stakeholder consultation, co-operation and collaboration with other agencies, governments, First Nations and the local community. The KSCP will contribute to the Ministry's goal of increasing resource decision-making efficiency and streamlining approval processes for the sustainable use of Crown land and water resources.
