Cariboo Chilcotin Land Use Plan

CCLUP Biodiversity Conservation

Introduction

The Biodiversity Conservation Strategy was prepared as part of the CCLUP Integration process. The strategy was completed in July 1996 and establishes landscape units and biodiversity emphasis across the region.

Implementation of the CCLUP since 1996 has raised a number of interpretive issues about biodiversity. Consequently the regional Biodiversity Conservation Committee has provided updates to the strategy to more fully explain key aspects.

Many of the general concepts developed in the CCLUP Biodiversity Conservation Strategy are well explained and documented in the earlier Forest Practices Code “Biodiversity Guidebook”:

Old Growth Management Areas

Old Growth Management Areas (OGMAs) have been spatially located across all landscape units in the Cariboo-Chilcotin to meet the Biodiversity Strategies old forest requirement.

Periodic Biodiversity Analysis

To facilitate implementation of the Biodiversity Strategy, ILMB provides periodic analyses of seral stage distribution and patch size for each landscape unit/BEC unit combination in the Cariboo-Chilcotin. BEC stands for Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification which is a system that maps and describes ecosystems in all areas of British Columbia.

Seral distribution assessment
Seral distribution reports document the area of current “mature plus old” in each landscape unit/ biogeoclimatic unit combination (LU/BEC) based on available data. The current area is compared to mature plus old targets. Smaller LU/BEC areas may be combined as documented in the “amalgamation tables” to meet mature plus old biodiversity seral targets. The following information is available:

Forest District abbreviations are as follows:
dch - Chilcotin (includes Anahim Round Table SRMP area)
dho - Horsefly (now part of Central Cariboo)
dmh - 100 Mile House
