Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands LUP

Community Viability Strategy

The strategic-level Land and Resource Management Planning process is entering “government-to-government” negotiations between the Province and the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN), with the objective of arriving at a final Land Use Plan. Linked to this process is the need to develop a strategy to ensure that communities in the plan area remain economically viable.

The Community Viability Steering Committee (CVSC) is a group of local government elected officials from all Islands-communities co-chaired by the Province and the CHN. Under the guidance of the CVSC, Islanders will be consulted in public processes on their vision for community viability on Haida Gwaii. The CVSC will provide key strategic direction on how on-Islands consultations should occur, contact information for key individuals/groups, arrange logistics for community input sessions, and provide key studies already completed that pertain to economic development on Haida Gwaii. Input to the Government to Government negotiations on the Land Use Plan will be provided by the Committee by the end of November, and a strategy for economic development is to be developed by March 31, 2007 considering and incorporating all input received by Islanders throughout the process.
