An alphabetical list of ILRR related terms and acronyms.
A
Active interest - the state of a right/interest, regulated use or designation, while it is subject to the terms and conditions of its related legislation
Adjoin - the state of a right/interest, regulated use or designation, while it is subject to the terms and conditions of its related legislation
Administrative boundaries - represent and describe authority for the administration of a specific area (i.e., Forest District describes area within which the District Manager controls harvesting, etc.)
Agency - an authority of the Government of British Columbia
Agency action - includes the whole or a part of an agency rule, order, license, sanction, relief or the equivalent or denial thereof, or failure to act
Agency record identifier - unique identifier assigned to the interest record by the issuing agency's operational database
AOI - area of interest
Application - a type of request, whereby a formal petition is made to a rights granting agency for the provision of an interest
Archaeological site - a distinct spatial clustering of artifacts, features, structures and organic and environmental remains, representing the residue of human activity
Area calculated - indicates if the Interest Area was provided by the source agency or calculated using the geometry present in the ILRR
Authentication source - BCeID or IDIR

BCeID - BCeID is an online service that makes it possible for you to use your Login ID and password to sign in securely to any BCeID participating Government web site. With BCeID, you don't need to enroll for a Login ID and password at each new site you visit - simply use the Login ID and password that you enrolled as your BCeID to sign in to any participating government site or service. Call the BCeID Help Desk at 1-888-356-2741 for information on obtaining a BCeID
Block - represents a portion or a particular division of surveyed land
BMGS - Base Mapping and Geomatic Services Branch - responsible for the Integrated Cadastral Fabric and is composed of a team of geomatics technologists and professionals who specialize in the provision of base map and georeferencing data, corporate data sets and derived products as well as derived information to clients in government and the private sector
Buffer - the number of metres that will surround the area that you define. ILRR will return all records within that area. You must enter a value between 0 and 10,000
C
Cadastral survey - a survey that determines and defines land ownership and can also involve on-site measurement, placement of markers, the creation of title or parcel description and/or the re-establishment of legal boundaries on land, above or below the surface, over water and in air space
CCSD - Crown Contaminated Sites Database
Conditions and restrictions - textual description of circumstances under which the interest has been granted, or any limitations that apply to the interest
Contains within - interests that are completely contained within the boundaries of the defined interest record geometry
Crown subdivision - division of Crown land
CSV - Coma Separated Values - contains the values in a table as a series of ASCII text lines organized so that each column value is separated by a comma from the next column's value and each row starts a new line

Designations - processes that establish rights or restrictions on resources as a result of an instrument external to the rights of the granting agency
District lot number - a type of primary land division or description, which defines a parcel of land that has been surveyed

GATOR - Government Access Tool for On-line Retrieval allows registered users to use the Internet to interactively view, extract and print information and to access images of Crown Land records contained in Tantalis
Geometric coordinates - explicit geo-referenced coordinates ( e.g. a polygon representing the boundary of the interest at the correct location on the earth)
GIS - A geographic information system (GIS) (also known as geographical information system, particularly in the UK and geomatics in Canada) is a system for capturing, storing, analyzing and managing data and associated attributes which are spatially referenced to the earth. In the strictest sense, it is a computer system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing, sharing and displaying geographically-referenced information. In a more generic sense, GIS is a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze the spatial information, edit data, maps and present the results of all these operations.
Geographic information system technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, asset management, Environmental Impact Assessment, Urban planning, cartography, criminology, history, sales, marketing and logistics. For example, GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster, GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution, or GIS can be used by a company to site a new business to take advantage of a previously undeserved market.
GML - an XML based encoding standard for geographic information. The language allows Internet browsers the ability to view web-based mapping without additional components or viewers

ICF - Integrated Cadastral Fabric - a digital, spatial representation of the complete and current state of the province's survey parcel fabric - private titles. An initiative for establishing the ICF dataset and a set of supporting systems is currently underway
ICIS - Integrated Cadastral Information Society - ICIS is a public/private partnership of local government, BC utilities and the BC provincial government. Its mandate is to develop an integrated and layered database of land use and tax-base information. See www.icisociety.ca for more information

ILRR interest identifier - a unique number assigned to the record when the record is added to the ILRR database
ILRR record identifier - a unique number assigned to the record when the record is added to the ILRR database
IMF - Internet Mapping Framework - The mapping framework used by ILRR. Built by Moxi Media for the Province of British Columbia, IMF is a reusable set of tools and routines used for developing web mapping applications. See http://moximedia.com/imf.html for more information
Inactive interest - a formerly active interest that no longer entitles or binds the holders to certain legal privileges or restrictions associated with tenure and land use activities (inactive records cannot return to active status)
Interest - a right or claim whereby the holders are entitled to or are bound by certain legal privileges or restrictions associated with tenure and land use activities
Interest area - size of the interest in hectares
Interest date - the date that an Agency recorded the right or interest
Interest geometry - the coordinates forming one or more points, lines or polygons that describe the location of an interest
Interest granting agency - an agency that has legislative authority to grant rights on behalf of the Province of British Columbia

Interest holder - an individual or corporation that has complete or partial ownership of an interest, or has made a request for an interest
Interest status - the states an interest record can hold: request, active, inactive, suspended
Interest type - the identifier or subtype of an interest
Interest type description - a detailed or long form description of the interest type. Definitions can be found through the ILRR Left Navigation Menu, under ILRR Related Links
Intersect - two or more interest records geometry overlap each other
IR number - indicates the Indian Reserve number for a specific Indian Reserve within a given Land District, in a format such as IR6, Cariboo District
IRIS - Integrated Resource Information System - Oil and Gas Commission Tenures
Issuing agency - agency that originally granted the right or interest
Issuing agency identifier - unique identifier for the issuing agency

JUROL - BC Assessment unique identifier - results from the concatenation of the Jurisdiction and Roll numbers
L
Land district - an administrative descriptor or division that also forms part of the legal description of surveyed parcels in BC, used in conjunction with other information such as District Lot numbers, Section number, in order to identify a particular parcel of land
Land title district - listing of Land Title Office Districts - areas are divisions or districts used by the Land Title Office. They are the following: Lands, Kamloops, Nelson, New Westminster, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Vancouver, Victoria, Unregistered
Land title subdivision - division of a primary parcel
Land use - Land Use Planning Areas - Integrated Land Management Bureau
Latitude - reference mechanism to describe the location of a place on earth, north or south of the equator, latitude provides an angular measurement ranging from 0 degrees at the Equator to 90 degrees at the poles. All locations of a given latitude are collectively referred to as a line of latitude or parallel because they are coplanar (parallel to the Equator)
Legal description - a structured legal description of the location of the right or interest, a method of describing land for registration or other purposes
Licence - includes the whole or part of an agency permit, certificate, approval, registration, charter, membership, statutory exemption or other form of permission
Licencing - includes agency process respecting the grant, renewal, denial, revocation, suspension, annulment, withdrawal, limitation, amendment, modification, or conditioning of a license
Line - a collection of points that define the length and shape of a linear feature
Longitude - reference mechanism to describe the location of a place on earth, east or west of a north-south line called the Prime Meridian. Longitude provides an angular measurement ranging from 0 degrees at the Prime Meridian ( Greenwich) to +180 degrees eastward and -180 degrees westward
Lot - a parcel shown on a deposited subdivision plan may be described: (a) as a lettered or numbered lot or block of the previously registered parcel dealt with by the plan, or (b) as a lot or block as shown on the plan without any reference to the former description of the land dealt with by the plan
LRDW - Land and Resource Data Warehouse - a Government of British Columbia corporate repository for land, resource and geographic data which offers three services: 1) Discovery Service allows users to determine what data is available in the warehouse, 2) Distribution Service allows users to order information for download from the warehouse to their own computers and 3) Access Service allows users to view warehouse data directly through a web browser using mapping software
M
Map Viewer - an interactive mapping tool that allows you to select an area of interest, display resource information of interest to you on a base map of the selected area, query the resource information, print the map or e-mail it to someone else
Meridian - represents a line of longitude. This type of designation is normally used in legal descriptions for parcels surveyed under the Dominion (Federal) Township Survey System, which is also know as the Railway Belt survey system in BC
Metadata - "data that describes data" - documents information about the data such as title, description, custodian, location and format

Name index - an alphabetical list of owners kept by the Registrar
Nature of event - location updated, status updated or new interest
Non-ICF layer - A yellow icon in the Land Title Subdivision Search Results screen indicates data not provided through the Integrated Cadastral Fabric (ICF). If you want to choose multiple records to view in Map Viewer, you must choose records that come from the same data source (i.e., all ICF or all non-ICF records)
Notification - the purpose of the Create Notification function is to allow you to identify saved queries that ILRR will monitor for any changes that occur within the record set defined by the query. When a change occurs, ILRR will automatically inform you via an email for each change that has occurred
Notification frequency - daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly
O
OGC - Oil and Gas Commission
Orthophoto - an aerial photograph that has been rectified such that it is equivalent to a map of the same scale. It is a photographic map that can be used to measure true distances, an accurate representation of the earth's surface
Owner - a person registered in the records as owner of land or of a charge on land, whether entitled to it in the person's own right or in a representative capacity or otherwise and includes a registered owner
P
PAR - Protected Areas - Ministry of Environment
Parcel - land defined by a survey plan, according to one of three basic categories of legal description: primary, subdivision, or right-of-way. Any lot, block or other area in which land is held or is subdivided
Pending interest - a type of request status that represents the state between the initial submission of the request for an interest and the granting of the interest
Pending number - numbers are assigned to applications prior to registration. They are marked up in the property index and shown on computerized titles
PID - Parcel Identifier - a unique number assigned by Land Titles office to identify each parcel of land within the province
PIN - Parcel ID Number - unique system-generated number used by Crown Lands
Plan - the Land Title Act Plan Number as registered in one of the Land Title Offices in BC
PNG Grid - Petroleum Natural Gas Grid. To do a spatial search using PNG Grid, turn on PNG Grid in Map Viewer
Point - a location represented by a single x, y pair
Polygon - a collection of points that define an enclosed shape and its area
Primary parcel - a primary parcel retains the original surveyed boundaries that defined it, in relation to the surrounding unsurveyed Crown land
Primary responsibility - the Interest granting agency that has primary responsibility for the management of the Interest as defined by the applicable legislation. In some instances, more than one agency has the authority to grant a specific interest type. In this situation, one agency will have primary responsibility for the interest type and the other will be considered to be a secondary Interest Granting Agency. For example: OGC, as a secondary interest granting agency, may issue Cutting Permits to allow their clients to harvest trees on property where they have petroleum rights. The primary responsible agency for a Cutting Permit is Ministry of Forests

Range - represents a particular division or survey description of a portion of land called a Range
Registration - the act of recording the particulars of a request or interest into a legal registry
Request date - date that the agency accepted the request or application for an interest
Requests - a petition made to a rights granting agency for the provision of an interest. Requests may or may not be subject to a formal application process
Responsible agency - In some instances, more than one agency has the authority to grant a specific interest type. In this situation, one agency will have primary responsibility for the interest type and the other will be considered to be a secondary Interest Granting Agency
Restriction - a description of any limitations that apply to a right that has been granted
Right - a type of interest that conveys to the holders certain legal privileges associated with tenure and land use activities
Right of way parcel - a parcel of land surveyed for statutory access or Right-of-Way purposes such as a road, wellsite or pipeline

Secondary responsibility - The Interest Granting Agency that has the authority to issue the Interest, but is not primarily responsible for the management of that Interest. In some instances, more than one agency has the authority to grant a specific interest type. In this situation, one agency will have primary responsibility for the interest type and the other will be considered to be a secondary Interest Granting Agency.
Section - represents a particular division or survey description of a portion of land called a Section
Sensitive record - indicates the level of sensitive data contained in the record, records are designated sensitive based on their type and their status
Shapefile - stores geometry and attribute information for the spatial features in a data set. The geometry for a feature is stored as a shape comprising a set of vector coordinates
Spatial relationship - Intersect - interest records that overlap the defined area; Adjoin - interest records that are next to the defined area; Contained within - interest records that are contained within the defined area
Statusing - the process of determining: 1. That the interest requested is available 2. Whether other interests exist that may conflict with the requested interest. 3. Whether any conditions or restrictions should apply to the interest
Subdivision number - the Land Title Act Plan Number for a Subdivision as it has been registered in the applicable Land Title Office
Subdivision parcel - a portion, sub-section, remainder or division of an original surveyed or primary parcel of land
Survey parcel - a surveyed parcel of land designated by a unique legal description with official plans or field notes deposited with the relevant authority. These parcels, in some cases, my be candidates for private ownership
Surveyed rights-of-way - a survey (usually under the Land Title Act) that allows access to land for right-of-way purposes. This would be an easement and would not lead to ownership
Suspended interest - an interest for which the granting agency has temporarily withdrawn the legal privileges or removed the restrictions associated with tenure and land use activities (a suspended right or interest can be reinstated to active status at a future date)
T
Tantalis - a restricted access operational system used to administer spatial and attribute information on Crown land including the parcel fabric, tenures and administrative boundaries. GATOR is used to view Tantalis records over the Internet
Term details - any conditions or details on the lease/term of the interest
Term duration - the length of time that the interest holder's interest is in effect, used in conjunction with the term duration unit
Term duration unit - the time measurement unit used in conjunction with the Term Duration e.g. Month, Year, Day, Week
Term end date - date that the interest holder's interest expires. If the right does not have an end date, this may be null
Term start date - date that the interest holder was granted the interest, or the date the interest became effective
Title - document number assigned by the Land Title Office in regard to an Indefeasible State of Title Certificate, indicating ownership or title
TNO - Treaty Negotiation Lands
Topography - the configuration of a surface and the relations among its man-made and natural features including the relative elevations of different features in a landscape
Township - represents a division of land, used in three types of legal descriptions: Dominion Township, Provincial Township, Townships and Sections
U
User ID - unique identifier for the user (based on IDIR or BCEID)

Viewing records - The user can view records as follows:
Full: User is able to access all attributes of the interest record (Geometry, Agency, Type and Content) except where attribute restrictions exist
Existence: User is able to view the Interest's Geometry, Agency and Interest Type, but may not access other record attributes
Notice: User receives a notification that a specific Interest Granting Agency may have an interest that matches the user's query parameters and provide Interest Granting Agency contact information. The user may not access any additional attributes of the record
None: User may not access any of the record's attributes. The record does not appear on any reports accessed by the user. The report will indicate that the record class is restricted to user type
W
Wildcard - a character (%) that may be used in a search term to represent one or more characters
