Overview

Black and white aerial photography is available for all of British Columbia at a variety of scales and, in some areas, dating back more than fifty years. Most areas of the province are covered by air photos less than ten years old, with large areas covered by medium scale (1:35,000/40,000) photography from 1996 to the present. This photography is being used for the enhancement and revision of the 1:20,000 scale digital Terrain Resource Information Management (TRIM) mapping program.

Colour aerial photography is becoming increasingly available for more areas of the province, particularly in the Okanagan, Kootenay and Cariboo areas.

Hard-copy air photos are available on both clear film (diapositives) and paper contact prints. Paper full-frame and partial enlargements are also available. For legal purposes, Air Photo and Digital Imagery can certify paper prints.

Air Photo hard copy is a product of the Air Photo and Digital Imagery program area of Base Mapping and Geomatic Services.

Product Details

Aerial Photographs are exposed at various altitudes using a variety of cameras, and providing overlapping or 'stereo' coverage of the ground. The scale of the photography varies, depending on the height of the aircraft above the ground, the focal length of the camera used, and the finished size of the photographic print. Over mountainous terrain the scale can vary considerably within each photo. Standard forward overlap between photographs along a flight path is 60% and standard lateral (side) overlap between adjacent strips on the flight path is 30%.

Stereo pairs are available and are often purchased by engineering and resource professionals for mapping and interpretive purposes.

The scale range for block aerial photography is 1:10,000 to 1:70,000. The scale range of site specific aerial photography is from 1:2,500 to 1:50,000. Not all scales are available for all areas.

Note that prefixes for black and white rolls are either "BC or, "BCB". Prefixes for colour rolls are "BCC".

Individual air photos (contact prints or enlargements) can be certified as to true copies and date of exposure, for court or litigation purposes.

Historical Air Photos

For certain areas of British Columbia, Base Mapping and Geomatic Services Branch has aerial photography dating back as far as 1936.

Hard copy air photo indexes for research purposes are available to view at the Air Photo Warehouse in Victoria. Private Air Photo Agents also have microfiche of these historical indexes and can assist you in determining the required roll and frame numbers to cover an area of interest. In future, the photocentre data will be captured in a digital format and be made available through the Base Map Online Store.

Due to the physical condition of rolls numbered from BC1 to BC550 (black/white coverage from 1936 to 1947), photographic reproductions may not be possible.

Prints from the imagery are produced from the archived digital files using ink-jet technology on premium lustre finish paper.

If required, an Air Lab technician will contact you about your order.
