Formerly Scamakounst Indian Reserve 19, Kincolith Band. Extinguished per Nisga'a Treaty and transferred to fee-simple interest: Lot 7222 Cassiar Land District. Name changed to Sgamagunt (site) per Nisga'a Treaty, Appendix F-3, effective 11 May 2000.

Sgamagunt [refers] to the whole Bear valley. The name is found in Wilson Duff's files: "the head of"; "the whole flat of the river". [T]xaamagoonskw: [T]xaa / all (of), entire...; magoon / head or source (of a tributary); magoonskw / (referred to as) head or source of.... that is, the entire valley referred to as the head of [Portland Canal]. (Sometimes a name may be pronounced differently simply for the sake of aesthetics or creativity - to make it unique.)
