Origin Notes and History

Seaskinnish Creek adopted in the 1930 BC Gazetteer as labelled on BC map 3M, 1916, not Skoskinist Creek as had been labelled on Geological Survey sheet 69A, Route map of part of the Nass River, 1912. Seaskinnish Creek confirmed 4 November 1948 on 103NE. Form of name changed to Ksi Sgasginist, per Nisga'a Treaty, Appendix F-3, effective 11 May 2000.

Ksi Sgasginist means "jackpine across the way (across the river/ obstructing passage/ or in the way)." Jackpine stands were so plentiful in this area at one time, as were other resources such as salmon and berries. [ksi/ water or tributary; sga/ across (the way of something); sginist/ jackpine, or simply pine tree]. Ksi in the context of geographical names means "water flowing out (of someplace)."
