Adventure Tourism Glossary
Adventure Tourism - Outdoor recreational activities provided on a fee-for-service basis, with a focus on experiences associated with the natural environment. Also known as nature-based tourism or commercial recreation.
Crown land - Land or land covered by water (such as rivers or lakes) that is owned by the provincial government. The vast majority of British Columbia's land area - fully 94 per cent - is Crown land.
Letter of agency - A legal letter indicating that an applicant has authorized another party to act for them in the processing of an application.
Management plan - A combination of text and maps that are part of the legal agreement between an adventure tourism tenure holder and government. It includes specific descriptions of the adventure tourism operation, including the location where the operation may occur, and the conditions, provisions, restrictions and guidelines for the use of Crown land for the operation.
Tenure - A type of right or title under which Crown land is held and used under the provisions of the Land Act. For adventure tourism, tenures can include permits, licences and leases.
